1932

Col. John Jackson Ledbetter Jr. El Paso

Leonora is seriously ill in bed in early February. Dr. Mewshaw makes house calls. Son Jack Wallace is growing — 28 pounds 10 ounces in February, 30 pounds by April.

The Bank Fails

On May 16, 1932: the bank in San Benito fails to open for business. JJL files affidavits with the State Banking Commission to recover $6.87 in his own name and $20 plus interest in Jack Wallace’s savings account. The Depression touches everything.

Military Reserve

JJL drives to Camp Bullis in March and acts as Commander of Battery B, 1st Battalion.

Up at 5:30 a.m. and drove to Camp Bullis. Left camp at 8:00 with Battalion of F.A. I was acting as Commander of Btry B 1st Bn. After an R.S.O.P. problem on the route we went into camp for the night near Camp Stanley. Put the battery into position after dark. Slept on a cot in a pup tent tonite and to have frozen. (March 30)

The Stomach

The trouble deepens. Examined by Dr. Cummins with a fluoroscope in August, JJL learns the problem may be in his appendix, not his stomach. Continuing episodes of sickness through the fall. This ulcer will shadow him for decades.
