Col. John Jackson Ledbetter Jr. El Paso

Licensed to Practice Law

On January 10, after years of self-study begun in December 1929, the milestone arrives:

Received in the morning mail my license to practice law in Texas. Appeared before C. W. Harper District Clerk El Paso County Texas, took the oath as an attorney and registered about 10:30 a.m.

JJL is now both a civil engineer and a licensed attorney — a dual qualification that will define the rest of his career.

Two Small Boys

The diary is full of Jack and Bill’s childhood. Jack may have whooping cough in May — he “coughed and vomited all day.” In December, Jack’s tonsils and adenoids are removed at Providence Hospital. JJL buys him a Mickey Mouse watch afterward.

Bill is cutting teeth by May, walking by November, weighing 44 pounds by February. Leonora is pregnant again; the rabbit test is positive on January 19.

The Flute

On November 10, JJL buys a flute for $43.75 from Ed Tiner and spends “considerable time practicing my new flute.” A&M beats Texas 20–6 on Thanksgiving.
