The bleakest year in the diary. Almost every entry records ulcer trouble, sinus trouble, or being home in bed. JJL begins the year in bed with ulcer trouble on January 1. Massive gaps follow — no entries from January 22 through April 27, or from April 30 through June 12.

The Ulcer

A fluoroscopic and X-ray exam on August 1 confirms the worst:

Went to see Dr. Holty at 8:30 a.m. for fluoroscopic & x-ray examination of gastro intestinal tract. Holty said I had active duodenal ulcer crater.

Small Comforts

JJL buys a 1949 Buick sedan from Covert Automobile Co. for $2,816. He transfers the family’s church membership to Terrytown Presbyterian Church; Jack and Bill join the same church. The year ends with family Christmas photos.
