Lucy A. Ledbetter
15 October 1879 – 28 June 1948
Lucy A. Ledbetter was the wife of John Jackson Ledbetter Sr. and mother of three children: Col. John Jackson Ledbetter Jr., Alvin Ledbetter, and Margaret Ledbetter Dewey.1
Illness and Death
In December 1947, word reached Austin that Lucy had suffered a cerebral hemorrhage.2 Her condition worsened through the spring. On June 6, 1948, Virginia Davis called from Blytheville, Arkansas, to say that Dr. Johnson believed Lucy could live only two or three weeks.3
JJL and Leonora drove to Blytheville. Lucy died on June 28, 1948, at 1:50 p.m. She was sixty-eight years old. JJL called his brother Alvin by long distance in Butte, Montana, with the news.3
Burial
Lucy was buried at Maple Grove Cemetery in Blytheville, Arkansas. The funeral cost $585.00 — a figure JJL recorded with his characteristic precision.3
